Ethnography Executive Report

Lisa - Last Post

I think this project is awesomely complicated :) Even though we've spent A LOT of time working on this project, it is worth our effort because it helped us know more about the AIS community and how we as students should contribute to that. Especially, I love working with Linda. She's very creative and responsible for every piece of work. I also want to send my thanks to AIS members who have helped us fill out our super long survey - they've been very detailed and empathic for what we have been doing. In brief, what I've learnt from the project is that we should be who we are; we should love ourselves so that we can focus on improving us, making us the best out of every day.

Tom T - Last Post

Hello, I’m Tom. In this ethnography project I helped Zack to interview and find facts about American International School (history, rewards, data, information and interesting facts). I think that this project is very good because it’s fun and I have a chance to meet new people in my school, know about them more, and what they think about AIS students, and more... But I have a lot of projects coming on and this project is not easy, so I don’t want to do this again anymore.

I’m a bad writer so I’m out of ideas again. THE END!

Zack - Last Post

I’m Zack and this is my reflection about my ethnography project. My job was to interview the staffs and securities. I met and talked to people that I did not usually talk with. I also learned some new things about them like they really like to work with our foreigner teachers. They like the new environment in our school and also experience new jobs. This project is helpful but it is also really complicated. The range and information are huge. I don’t think I want to face it again.

Linda - First & Last Post :P

Hey yo guys, wassup?! I know I was supposed to write a long time ago, but you know, I have been very busy with all the projects we had and all the interviews, blah blah blah! I had taken a lot and lot of pictures. I interviewed many and many students.

I interviewed Josh and Celine in grade 6; Sofia, Anh Nguyen, Long and Sally in grade 7; Minami, Onica, David and Vivi in grade 8. I asked them about where they come from; how have being a part of AIS changed them; why do they go to school; is it important to be yourself? Why? Who are they as a person? And some more questions. Each of them I asked different questions depending on their personality.

But until yesterday, I figured out that my memory card had been broken. I gave my camera to Lisa so she could take the videos that I took and put them all together with hers. But when she plugged the memory card to the computer, the computer couldn’t read the card. Lisa tried every way to fix it – she called the IT guy, she brought the camera to a shop to fix it, but it was hopeless. The memory card had been broken and all the pictures, videos that I took – are all gone!

But no worries! Lisa and I thought of a new idea right away. We decided to interview others online and it would also show that we use technology to study. So today and yesterday’s night, I had to interview Onica, Vivi in grade 8 and T.V. in grade 7 online. I interviewed Onica by skype, Vivi by yahoo and T.V. by ooVoo. I asked them mostly the same questions that I asked before.

This project is very big and tired but also a very fun project to do. I have been taught so much more about AIS, my friends, the teachers from this project. I have learned so many new ideas and way to present the presentation from Lisa.

THANK YOU LISA! I LOVE YOU!

Z: What’s your name?
IT: My name is Khoa.
Z: How do you think about your job, salary, and working environment?

IT: They are very energetic, outstanding and have a high creativity. Still, I hope they can improve more in the future.
Z: Thank you very much!

Entry #9 - Working Day! [By Lisa]

Even though I'm writing the entry on Saturday, I want to tell the story of yesterday. The academic bowl was extremely fun. Despite the fact I didn't sign up for any team, Ms. B randomly put me in a team anyway, and unfortunately enough, we didn't win. Actually, we lost to John's! Urgg!!

Anyway, later when we proceeded into the canteen for an assembly, it was worth listening when Mr. Greg told us about not giving up and keep walking forward. Keep trying even though you might fail - it's a good message. He just wanted us to be happy and proud of ourselves, because we've tried our best, when we receive our report cards in the following week. Besides, he also mentioned me for my poem getting published in the magazine, and he asked me to stand up. It was seriously embarrassing, yet really really honorable.

Well, Alex team won for the students', obviously enough - and we all cheered for him. I hate the fact that the teachers team won, but it was actually a cool event anyway. After that, Mary, Linda, Vivi, Jessica, Justine, Jack, Selena, and Darlene came to my house to record some songs - credited to this ethnography project that you will later see, and afterward we spent some extremely memorable times together. We chatted and sort of got closer to each other, and we also came to discuss about our future jobs. Mary wants to be a pharmacist - which I think wouldn't fit her because she's got a talent not in pharmacy (she should follow her dream and not her parents' - no offense); Jessica wants to be a doctor - wish her my best luck because she's extremely smart; and Selena wants to be a tour guide - with her extreme level of humor and speech, she'll make it! (besides, she likes to travel) We also talked about other matters, and they were worth our time because we all got better and relaxed after telling our stories.

Right now, we're working on our final production of the project. I'm worried though, that it might not be as good as expected. We've only surveyed 3 staffs - which are NOT enough! This week as a busy one, yet we can't give any excuse for that. Gosh!!! I'm getting crazy!!!!!

P/S: A new student is coming next week, and she is a girl! Hope we'll get along well, so please all of us show our best hospitality <3

Entry #8 - Phew... [By Lisa]

It has already come to the 4th day of our project - well, literally, and so far everything has been well. The interviews are great as expected, or even more, and we have truly learned a lot during the pass few days trying to understand more about AIS community. Walking around the school are little paparazzi taking pictures for 'ethno' - as they call, which is totally hilarious. So far we've done Math project, Science test, and tomorrow all the grades for quarter 3 will be settled. Phew... What a release, ikr?

Anyway, Linda is back and so is Zack. All of us are working really hard for the final production, and we think it will surprise all of you guys - or so we hope :) Yesterday I was horribly sick and couldn't do anything, even posting an entry. In fact, it was a horrible day yesterday. I had a fight with some of my friends and it made me feel despicable of myself. I talked to Susan, and she said she liked the old me better - who accepted for who I was and kept on being confident to improve myself. So yeah, I guess I have to have more high self-esteem and self-confidence. I was born this way, and that's the real me. Sorry, I'm getting out of the topic much, but that was pretty much my day yesterday.

On a totally extremely different hand, today was like the sweetest day of the week. Besides for knowing the fact we're going to have a half day tomorrow and that we've nearly come to the end of quarter 3, we also had a lot of laughter today - and I honestly have no idea why :) I also went to the Elementary school to interview some students and parents, and while at there I met my 'old student'. I was Mr. Matt's assistant during the summer for a kindergarten grade, and there was a really smart student named Kevin. I met him again today, and it was so nice that he still remembered me :D As smart as ever, he made a great interview.

In short, the interview videos will be on during the weekend because I still have to edit them.

Tomorrow's plan: Academic bowl; ViVi's group is coming to my house to record the songs for this project!!! Exciting!!!

Entry #7 - A Troubled Day! [By Zack]

Hello, I’m Zack and also the writer of the piece of work which you’re reading. This is a journal so I obviously should tell you guys about my today experience. Today sucked and I’m not kidding. My first two hours of school were filled with boring class works and nothing else. I barely survived from sleep after that.  Opposite with the other part of the day, lunch was pretty good. I ate a lot of stuffs. But the food made me tired in the afternoon which I would have a science test and turn in math project. Lucky for me, I returned home in ONE PIECE. I thought I will be safe but things turned out pretty bad. I had nothing to eat so I needed to have some instant noodle which I just had yesterday. Then, I realized that I forgot my Chinese textbook so I had nothing to study for the next quiz. And the quiz is tomorrow. And I just got 50% on my last quiz. About this ethnography project, I was little bit behind schedule but I started to catch up already. I interviewed some staffs and securities and it turned out pretty well. I guess.
I think I’m out of words so THE END.
P.S: This is not a SPAM!!! >.<

Entry #6 - Double Entries :) [By Tom T]

Journal: 15/3/11
I write this journal late because Lisa forgot to remind me to do it (actually she forgot to do it too). However, the social studies Africa map quiz will move to tomorrow (3/16/11) because we learned about Japan’s earthquake, tsunami and nucleus explosion… It was very bad.
Math project is due tomorrow! I have to stay awake until 11 o’clock to do it. I was sleepy so it wasn’t very good. And, I finally started a little bit on this ethnography project, that’s a good thing. Also, my job is not school history finder anymore, now my job is to help Zack to interview people. Oh, tomorrow we will also have a Science Quarter 3 exam too, and I forgot to study for it.

Journal: 16/3/11
Today Mr. Patrick was absent again, so good but it’s the worst day in school. We could do ethnography the last time in Language Arts class before the due date. I and Zack interviewed three people (IT, security, and librarian) and asked some questions about the school history in the school office.  Anyway, the social quiz is in 7th period, math project is due at 6th, Science Q3 test is at 8th … Busy afternoon. I didn’t do Literature Circle yet and it’s due tomorrow (3/17/11). I have a lot to do. Bye.
